As with many historic American figures of the 19th century, Sojourner Truth’s story is incomplete and somewhat mythical, a fact compounded by her having been born a slave. This detailed program traces the lifelong odyssey of a woman who literally walked out of bondage, changed her name in 1843, and traveled the country as an abolitionist and women’s rights advocate. Along the way she would meet Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln and be further cast into fable by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Interviews with scholars and dramatic readings from Truth’s speeches and autobiography conjure more clearly a picture of this truly heroic woman.

In Margaret Fuller’s Memoirs she wrote, “I remember how, as a little child, I had stopped myself one day on the stairs, and asked ‘How came I here? How is it that I seem to be this Margaret Fuller? What does it mean? What shall I do about it?’” During her brief life of 40 years, Fuller made every effort to answer those questions, supported and documented by her inquiring nature and writings, all to fulfill American women’s growing intellectual and spiritual needs. In this program hosted by James H. Bride, distinguished educators Megan Marshall (author of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize-winning biography, Margaret Fuller: A New American Life), Joan Von Mehren, Peter McFarland, and Joel Myerson contribute to the first comprehensive overview of Margaret Fuller’s life, times, and achievements.

African-American women have captured the moral imagination of mainstream America through their essays, novels, poetry, and other artistic endeavors, breaching the static lines of race, gender, and class. How have their reflections so clearly articulated the hopes and philosophies of so many? In this program, writers Alice Walker and bell hooks and Ohio State University faculty Dr. Martha Wharton, of the departments of African-American studies and women’s studies, and Dr. Valerie Lee, of the departments of English and women’s studies, examine the emergence of African-American women as popular and powerful voices of social conscience.

African-American women in the military service did not receive proper recognition for their service. Reflecting that apartheid custom, the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion was the only African-American WAC unit to serve overseas in WWII. This unit was responsible for redirecting the mail to the GI's on the battlefield, a Sisyphean feat, considering that troops were constantly on the move.

Hosted by Academy Award-winner Rita Moreno and Dee Wallace Stone, Women First & Foremost offers shining examples of how generations of women have achieved their deserved place at the forefront of history.

From the end of the 19th century, the women of the European countries energetically demand the right to vote, better working conditions, and education, just like the Suffragette movement in England. Despite some progress, results are slow to come when the year 1914 dawns.
